The eight main characters are or are based on /sennin/ (仙人, immortal sages/hermits). According to introductions published in \i{Gamest}, they have trained in \b{/senjutsu/} (仙術, sage arts), powers demonstrated in-game during attacks, and wield \b{/paopei/} (宝貝, sacred treasures) for combat and other uses.
Some characters set out to defeat Ranju and the demon king Gaira to bring peace and prosperity to their people or kingdoms, though others have more frivolous reasons.
